Intervention Needed for Alexia Kyrklund

Posted 10/08/2006

To the Animal World,

Jennifer Pryor is the giving Goddess of the animal community.  However, I refuse to watch her get pressured into enabling a situation that will repeat itself without intervention.  Enough is enough.

Alex of Noah's Ark is a lovely girl with wonderful intentions, and should be recognized for her past good deeds.  I really like her, Nevertheless, through my own recovery of the mental disease of bulimia (and some hoarding), I also recognize the same character defects in my good buddy Alex.  A mental disease is not defined by it's symptoms.  Example, you cannot judge a bulimic by their weight.  It is the character defects that define the disease. Some of those are: being a victim and not taking responibility, control, working from guilt rather than love, running away from your own inventory to rescue others, etc.  This is what's defined my mental disease..... bulimia.  Food was my "drug of choice", and control of my weight was my way of continuing the mental disease.  Alex seems to be running away from deeper issues that have nothing to do with the animals (this, however, is actually none of our business, and for her to work out).  Still, what is apparent are her character defects of taking no responsibility, and by trying to control the situation, while staying a victim, and also rescuing beyond her means, yet feeling like she needs to be rescued.   No doubt, Long Beach has not acted in accordance to the Hayden Law, nor can Long Beach be considered a humane solution.  We need to help the animals.  But the only help for Alex is to not enable her to do this again, or it will repeat itself if we treat her like a victim.  Bottom line, Alex is an addict that collects animals beyond her means, and like all diseases, she cannot stop until we intervene.  We cannot judge her or anyone who has a mental disease.  Alex is not a "bad" person, on the contrary.  Still, Alex is no longer healthy enough to run a rescue.  She first needs recovery, which I will reach out and do with her, in a fellowship way.  If not, like all diseases, this will regress, even if she initially appears like a "functional hoarder."  These poor animals are not "used furniture".  They are live animals.  Blaming Long Beach for Alex's problems is like the alcoholic blaming their drinking on their problems.

My first step to recovery was recognizing it and then to "Let go, let God". Change happened when I took responsibility for any crisis in my life. These three things seem to be the toughest for Alex.

Let me make myself clear that it is not my business to tell people how to behave.  But like a drunk who decides to drive, I am stepping in to intervene, for the animals.  **PUT PRINCIPLES BEFORE PERSONALITIES!

I am working on making 12 step programs for hoarders, so if anyone wants to help they can contact us.
