East TX - Chocolate Lab - Tied and Drug Behind Truck

Posted 10/16/2006

See Updates Below

I am so ashamed and embarrassed to admit that this happened in East Texas.

A female chocolate lab - Nellie - was tied to the back of a pickup truck and drug down an asphalt road.  You can only imagine the results. A couple working in their yard saw the event and began screaming. They may have saved her life as the truck stopped and the two occupants untied her and drug her into the ditch to continue suffering in agonizing pain and to die.

Fortunately the couple sought help and Nellie was taken to a local veterinarian where she is being treated for her horrendous injuries. Not only did she have severe skin wounds - burns from the asphalt, her toenails were ripped out, the pads of her paws worn to the bone, and her knee was so badly injured she'll need surgery.  The injuries are so graphic the local TV station issued several warnings before showing them and have chosen not to include them on their website, though the video of the story is now available. The link to their story is:

I received the pics from one of the original people involved in her rescue. They are at the end of this email. However, I must warn you, they are intensely graphic and will break your heart while causing rage in your soul.

I do not know the people involved with the care or rescue of Nellie, but I do know that her vet bills are increasing daily. I know there are many incredible caring people out there who may be able to help with the expense. I feel this is the least we can do for her after she received such unimaginable injuries, intentionally, at the hands of two humans.

The vet who is treating Nellie is in Mineola, Texas.
His name and office address is:  Clifton Bradshaw, DVM.• 1124 W FM 564, Mineola,TX 75773;   ph: 903-569-5418

Unfortunately, the two people responsible for this have still not been identified. However the sheriff of Van Zandt County, Sheriff Pat Burnett, has stated that his department is aggressively following leads and they believe that two juveniles are responsible. All I can say is please, please put me on that jury! The sheriff could probably use letters of support from across the nation. This would be a great way to let them know that the nation is watching how this case proceeds. Just be sure to include in your contact where you are from (city, state) so they will realize this story has received national attention.

The contact information for the sheriff is: Sheriff Pat Burnett, 1220 W. Dallas Street, Canton, TX 75103.  Phone: 903-567-4133

I know there are hundreds of rescues and causes that need our donations. I just don't want there to ever be a question that Nellie's cost of recovery is "not worth the expense". Please help if you can. Any donation, in any amount, makes a difference. I am hoping to have Paypal account information for the vet clinic tomorrow but it is not thought that they have one at this time.

Thank you and please say a prayer for Nellie tonight.

Hi Everybody….

Just a quick note.  I visited with Anita, the vet tech at Lake Country Animal Clinic in Mineola, Texas on Saturday, October 21st.  The clinic has been overwhelmed with calls (903-569-5418) and offers of donations from all across the United States so it appears that Nellie’s recovery expenses will be met as we go along.  Anita indicated that the doctor is still indicating a 3 to 4 month recovery period for Nellie.  She emphasized that Nellie WILL SURVIVE.  The lady who was responsible for rescuing Nellie from a ditch where she was thrown after being dragged behind a pick-up truck will be adopting her when she has fully recovered.  This lady lives in the East Texas area.

I communicated to the clinic that we would be doing a fund-raising dinner on Saturday, November 11th and that the lion’s share of the net raised on that evening would go toward Nellie’s bills.  I asked for a general list of her charges as we go along and how the funds we raise would be applied to them and it appears that will be able to get that.

I am in the process of finalizing the dinner but it is now locked in for November 11th.  I will send you a flyer soon regarding that.

As for the perpetrator’s of this crime, Sheriff Pat Burnett of Van Zandt county is handling the investigation.  His physical address is 1220 West Dallas Street, Canton, Texas 75103.  His phone is: 903-567-4133, and his email address is:Sheriff@VZSheriff.com

I will be keeping you updated on this case as it proceeds.  At the moment, it appears that two juveniles were the perpetrators.  This is undoubtedly a case of Sadistic Abuse.

One of the roles of Kinder Harbors is to help prevent such situations from ever occurring through the compassion programs it will offer when Stage Two operations go into full swing in 2007.

Kinder Harbors Animal Sanctuary is a 501 c 3 pending tax exempt organization founded by David Howard in April 2006.

Thank you for your continued concern, compassion and sensitivity in this and all other animal abuse cases.

Update 11/08/2006

Apparently the Van Zandt County Sheriff, Pat Burnett, has been leaning towards this whole situation being an accident and/or unintentional. I wonder if he still thinks that way after one of the teens is now being arrested for another felony crime.  Please see the statement on his web page. The link is: http://www.vzsheriff.com/nellie.htm

You may contact him by email at this address: sheriff@vzsheriff.com

One of the teens accused of dragging Nellie has now been arrested for multiple drive by shootings. When you view this video, make sure to also click on the links to the other news stories regarding this case. One of them is where the mother of one of the teens is talking about her wonderful animal lover son who could never possibly have intentionally harmed Nellie. The other is of the witnesses describing what really happened when the boys left Nellie.

You will also see some of the most recent video footage of Nellie in this story.

Here is the story and the links:

Again, all of your thoughts and concern for Nellie are greatly appreciated. I have no doubt she knows that we are all thinking of her!
