Idaho's request to kill wolves denied

Officials in Idaho may not remove wolves in the Clearwater Region, according to a decision made by federal officials. Earlier this year, the Idaho Fish and Game Department (IDFG) proposed a controversial wolf cull in the Lolo elk management zone in the Clearwater Region of north-central Idaho. Idaho The agency requested permission to kill up to 75 percent of that region's wolf population due as a means to declining increase elk numbers.
 
According to the IDFG, the Lolo elk population has been declining for some time due in part significantly to wolf predation on elk cows. They The IDFG estimates that by removing removal of 75 percent of the 47 to 69 wolves in the Lolo elk management zone over five years would increaseover five years, elk production and survival would increase.
 
Federal officials disagreed and stated that although wolves may play a role in elk population recoverydecline, they cannot draw the same conclusions as the IDFG, based on the data submitted by the IDFG.
