Cheyenne - Needs Surgery

Posted 10/31/2006

When Cheyenne went into foster care on Saturday, October 28th from a local shelter, she was underweight from what we assumed had been from recently weaning a litter of puppies prior to her owners abandoning her. We all looked forward to her gaining some healthy weight back in a nurturing home environment with plenty of good food.

But by Tuesday the 30th, she couldn't keep food down at all, and was increasingly weak and dehydrated. A trip to the vet the very same day brought the bad news: without immediate surgery to correct a blockage in her intestinal tract, Cheyenne would die by morning. There was no time to spare, and as far as we were concerned there was no other option than to do everything we could to save her. So that evening, when the vet staff should have been heading home to enjoy Halloween with friends and family, they stayed late to perform the life-saving procedure.

We are happy to report that Cheyenne was a trooper through and through, and is now resting comfortably! Best of all, she is scheduled to make a complete recovery and we are once again eager to see her fill out from some good, home-cooked meals from her doting foster mom.

Her extensive medical bills were worth every penny to us knowing that she will now be a healthy, happy girl. But they couldn't have been more unexpected or come at a worse time, as we attempt to recover financially from other recent vet bills for two other dogs who required urgent medical treatment. This has hit our meager funds harder than we could have imagined, and what we need more than anything right now is the support of our pittie-loving friends.

Please consider offering whatever amount you can to help us cover Cheyenne's veterinary bills. By doing so, you support our tireless work on behalf of all of the homeless pit bulls in San Diego in need of a second chance at life.

Please note that Pit Bull Rescue San Diego does not adopt on a first come first served basis. Generally we have formed an opinion about the sort of home that we want for each of the dogs in our program. This opinon is formed from knowing each dog and observing their interactions in various situations and through periodic evaluations. Our goal is to place our charges in the home that is the best possible for that particular dog. Our only goal is happiness and forever homes for our dogs. A forever home is most likely to happen when we do the best we can to find lifestyles and personalities that match.

We are aware that this is a human process and that you may or may not agree with our decisions. Please understand that we take very seriously the lives placed in our hands for this brief time and our decisions are only made out of protectiveness for the breed and the specific dogs we are placing and not out of any judgment of you or your life.
