FIRE THREATENS NEW LEASH ON LIFE!

Posted 09/01/2006

Yesterday, fire ripped through Placerita Canyon (the area our "Ranch" is located) and charred everything but our E.R.A. Center, dog kennels and aviary. The brush fire broke out on Placerita Cyn Rd on Monday, August 27th. By evening, over 900 acres had burned. At this time, firefighters have contained the blaze.

Our amazing staff and volunteers lead by Alec, rushed to our aid to evacuate all of our dogs and fowl. The dogs had been evacuated when Bobby, Sharon, Diane and Kai arrived just in time to round up and catch Hansel and Gretel, our geese, the chickens, rooster and 9 pigeons as the fire came within inches of the aviary. Luckily, all animals were safely removed from the property and housed temporarily at Alec's house in Newhall. Thankfully, no animals or people suffered injuries or harm.

Unfortunately, our dedicated caretaker, Diane Kinder's mobile home was burnt to the ground. She has lost everything. She lost her home, clothing and all personal items. Diane has such an amazing spirit and has done so much for NLOL and the animals. Even when asked how she's doing, she stated, "Everything that meant the world to me is saved... my 2 cats and my dog, Stoney."

Diane wishes to thank Jackie and Anita who saved her beloved pets. Her cats were terrified and in hiding, but Jackie did not give up. She was able to bring both to safety. Stoney, a big "talker," did not deter Anita from removing him from his home so he could be safely reunited with Diane.
Please help Diane rebuild her home. A fund through New Leash On Life has been set up for her. Click here to donate and help Diane.

Although our main buildings are intact, our trees, rose garden, Shadowland Memorial Park and much of the surrounding landscape has burned. We will need to replace one of our dog run areas, all awnings and shade coverings, snake fencing surrounding the entire property, all water hoses and piping, stairs to the dog park, trees, grass, well house and pump, and water tank.

The estimated damage totals approximately $15,000.
We need your
donation today! Thankfully, all of our animals and buildings are safe, but we will need funds to repair what has been damaged. Click here to make a donation! Your donation will help us rebuild our beautiful ranch. To volunteer your time to help, please email volunteer@nlol.org  (@nlol.org) .
